On 25th October, Australia hammered Netherlands for 399 runs in 50 overs. It was a record breaking match in many ways. Glenn Maxwell scored the fastest ODI World Cup century, Australia beat Netherlands by 309 runs which is the biggest victory margin in World Cup history and one more was registered by Bas de Leede.
Unfortunately for Bas de Leede, this is a record he would not want to be associated with. In his spell of 10 overs, de Leede picked up the crucial wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Josh Inglis, but he was also hit for 115 runs. His figures of 2/115 is now the worst bowling figures in One Day International history. The record was previously held by Australian Mick Lewis, who had conceded 113 in his 10 overs against South Africa in 2006. In the 60 balls he bowled, 13 were sent for boundaries and 6 for maximums. Despite the beating, de Leede currently is the 9th highest wicket taker in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup.
Coming in to chase 400 runs, Netherlands couldn’t breach the 100 run mark. They were bowled out for 90 runs, with the Australian bowling attack ripping through their batting line up. Adam Zampa picked up 4 wickets, Mitchell Marsh had 2 and the pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins each picked up one.
Glenn Maxwell’s magic throw gets Vikramjit Singh run out
Chasing a humongous target of 400, Netherlands did not start off well. In the 5th over they lost opener Max O’Dowd to Mitchell Starc. One over later, opener Vikramjit Singh tried stealing a single by playing the ball towards Mid-off. Glenn Maxwell just swooped the ball and threw it at the stumps, getting the opener run-out.
Australia will now play neighbors New Zealand on 28th October in the HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala. Netherlands will play Bangladesh on the same day against Bangladesh in Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Australia has jumped to 4th place on the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup and have had a huge net run rate boost, while Netherlands have dropped to the bottom of the table.
