The BCCI, ECB and CA were in talks of launching a Women’s Champions League, but finding a free window seems like a tough task. Even though the women’s cricket calendar is not the busiest, the emergence of domestic leagues has made it impossible for boards to find a vacant spot.
A proposal for the Women’s T20 Champions League was under discussion by the three boards of India, England, and Australia but it did not get approval due to a packed schedule in the latter half of the year. A champions league of the franchisees of the three countries was proposed similar to that of the Men’s Champions League that took place from 2008-2014.
Initially, it was just Australia with their Women’s Big Bash League but since the emergence of the Hundred in England and Women’s Premier League in India, female cricketers are set to have busier schedules than before and a lot more of game time.
What are the hindrances for Women’s Champions League?
A BCCI source gave insights on what the boards have been discussing with regard to the Women’s Champions League. He also talked about the problems the three boards are facing in execution.
He said, “The idea was floated during the ICC meetings and lot of work needs to take place before the project takes flight. The main thing is the interest from the broadcasters and then we will also need to look at a window and player availability. Women’s cricket is more established in England and Australia at the moment but India is catching up fast. WPL was a big hit earlier this year and the proposal can only see the light of the day if it is sustainable for the broadcaster.” via News18.
While there is still a long way to go before a final call is made on the future of the Women’s Champions League, Women’s cricket is set to have a busier calendar than before with the Hundred coming up, WPL scheduled for around Diwali, followed by the WBBL.
