BCCI likely to name separate captains of Indian team for each format

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keen to field a different set of players for each format of the game. It is one of the major reforms that the body is planning to bring into action after team India’s poor performances. After a disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2022, India went on to lose a three-match ODI series against Bangladesh.
Unhappy and unsatisfied with the performance of the team, the governing body is looking to groom specialized players for each format. According to a report published in Jagran News, only a few names will be allowed to play in two or more formats of the game. The rest of the names will change based on the format concerned.
The Men in Blue are yet to win an ICC trophy since their 2013 Champions Trophy. They have come close to winning a title several times but have failed every time. The loss against Bangladesh has raised further questions on the group as the 2023 ODI World Cup is just a year away from now.

Rohit Sharma’s test career in jeopardy

Surprisingly, the current skipper of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma‘s Test career has come under the radar. There have been reports that management want to move ahead of the veteran skipper. They are likely to give more opportunities to youngsters to build a strong base for the future.
But it will be a difficult decision to make as Rohit has been their key batter in the past few years in the longest format of the game. To put it into context, he has scored the most runs for India since 2019. The 35-year-old batter has 1552 runs in 30 innings, averaging 55.42, including five centuries and four half-centuries.

As things stand, the ODI captaincy duties might remain with Rohit Sharma as the mega-event isn’t too far from now. The tournament will be played in India and hence, his experience will be a vital factor. For T20I, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is the front-runner for the captaincy option. And in Tests, the selectors might look at KL Rahul or even Rishabh Pant, who has good numbers in the format to support his case.
