During the 2009 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the self-less deed of Bollywood star Akshay Kumar saved the Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) in a surprising turn of events. In his autobiography “Pitchside: My Life in Indian Cricket“, the former COO of the franchise, Amrit Mathur, revealed this engaging tale of financial redemption and sacrifice.
When the IPL started out in 2008, there were doubts about its eventual success. However, Bollywood superstars such as Preeti Zinta, Shah Rukh Khan and Shilpa Shetty saw its potential and joined numerous franchises. In 2009, Delhi Capitals innovatively signed a three-year contract with Akshay Kumar, anticipating that his celebrity power would propel their brand through advertising content and his appearances at events.
Despite their best efforts, the franchise was unable to effectively utilize Akshay’s influence, resulting in unexpected financial setbacks. As the season came to a close, they experienced significant losses. In the middle of this chaos, Akshay Kumar’s generosity sparkled. When questioned about the contract related complications, he proposed an unanticipated solution i.e. to terminate the contract.
Mathur’s autobiography reveals his uplifting conversation with Akshay. The actor’s readiness to terminate the contract exhibited his dedication towards the team’s well-being, ultimately preventing their financial disaster. In a league that has become a worldwide phenomenon, this incident is an extraordinary demonstration of the power of benevolence and the unanticipated consequences of a star’s actions.
Delhi Capital, still a highly popular IPL franchise

After finishing as the runners-up in the 2020 IPL season and making repeatedly in playoffs, Delhi, now renamed as Delhi Capitals, is still a very popular IPL franchise in 2023. Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Rovman Powell, Axar Patel, Anrich Nortje, Kuldeep Yadav, and Prithvi Shaw are just a few of the notable players in the team.
After losing their captain Rishabh for a season because of severe injuries received in a car accident, DC did not make the playoffs this year. In his absence, Warner took command of the team. The team was only able to win five of their fourteen games, finishing in ninth place on the table.
