Pakistan greats lambast Jay Shah

BCCI secretary and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Jay Shah has made a controversial statement regarding India’s decision to opt-out of the Asia Cup 2023 that Pakistan will host. This has baffled many Pakistani fans and ex-cricketers to an extent that some have started boycotting the high-octane clash between the two rivals on Sunday [October 23].

Pakistani greats Younis Khan and Kamran Akmal shared their opinion on the ARY News’ popular talk show Har Lamha Purjosh. Both urged their board to take a firm stance on the issue, saying Pakistan should host the Asia Cup 2023 even if India decide to not participate in it.

Watch the video:

I think Jay Shah should not have said that but since the bullet has been fired I would ask the PCB to take a firm stance on this issue, just like we did in the past [after New Zealand called off Pakistan’s tour at the eleventh hour] and as you know those teams have begun to tour the country,” said Younis.

But if they [BCCI] decide to stick with their decision then it should not matter to us if the Indian team does not participate in Asia Cup and we should consider not travelling to India for the ODI World Cup the following year, nor we should agree to host Asia Cup at a neutral venue,” he added.

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal had gone a step further, saying Jay Shah should not drag politics into sports. Akmal wanted a complete boycott of the India-Pakistan clash at any level, including the upcoming Sunday’s clash.

Asia Cup should only be hosted in Pakistan and if that does not happen then Pakistan should not play against India at any level, be it ICC events’ matches, Asia Cup matches, or even their match on October 23,” he added.

It’s worth to be noted that following Shah’s controversial statement, PCB released an official statement concerning the same on Wednesday. The board expressed disappointment in Shah’s not discussing the matter with ACC or PCB before announcing India’s decision. The board also accused Shah of disrupting the philosophy and spirit of the ACC whose principal role is to safeguard the interests of its members.
