Earlier, SRH had won the toss and decided to bowl first. Then walked out to the field Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway and their brilliant 182-run stand-in helped CSK post a massive target of 203 to SRH.
Ruturaj Gaikwad missed his century by just 1 run. He smashed SRH bowlers to score 99 runs off 57 balls by hitting 6 fours and 6 sixes. But he had to walk back with his head down after a slow and short ball of T. Natarajan made Gaikwad fail to get the right elevation and gave a simple catch to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Devon Conway also made his presence felt on the field as he scored an unbeaten 85 off 55 balls with 8 fours and 4 sixes.
SRH responded with opening batsmen Abhishek Sharma and Kane Williamson playing their best shots to start a terrific attack. Abhishek scored 39 in 24 balls with 5 fours and a six. But a slower ball from Mukesh Chaudhary made Abhishek hit it towards the mid-wicket fence but the ball came off the shoulder of the bat and lobbed up towards long-on and Dwaine Pretorius grabbed it.
Kane Williamson played a knock of 47 runs in 37 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes. He was given LBW through Pretorius’s length ball. Williamson had bent his back knee and tried to heave it over the leg side but missed and was pinged on the back leg. The finger of the umpire had gone up so a DRS was taken and the decision made Williamson leave the field. Mukesh Chaudhary picked four wickets of Abhishek, Rahul Tripathi, Shashank Singh, and Washington Sundar.
Nicholas Pooran did his best to revive SRH’s innings with his 64 off 33 balls with 3 fours and 6 sixes. But at the end Men in Yellow had the last laugh by beating the Men in Orange by 13 runs. This win was CSK’s 3rd victory in their 9 matches.
“A change of captain dosen’t change everything, we are in the same dressing room, saying the same things. It’s just a happy co-incidence,” said MS Dhoni during the post-match presentation.
