The cricket world is divided over the timed-out controversy which led to Sri Lanka’s Angleo Mathews‘ dismissal during their 2023 ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Mathews’ brother, Trevis Mattews warned Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hasan of the consequences of his actions during the game.

For the unversed, Mathews was walking toward the pitch when the chin strap of his helmet broke. Now the International Cricket Council‘s (ICC) law has made it mandatory for a batter to face the first delivery within two minutes of the fall of a wicket.

Shakib appealed to the umpire for Mathews’ dismissal and the umpire did not hesitate much to comply with the rule, as a result of which, the ex-Sri Lankan skipper became the first batter in the history of international cricket to get dismissed via timed out. Shakib faced the wrath of critics for his decision to get Mathews out with this method.

Now Mathews’ brother Trevis talked of the incident and said that the people of Sri Lanka wouldn’t welcome Shakib in the country and he would be pelted with stones. Trevis also criticised Shakib, calling him a player with no sportsman spirit.

We are very disappointed. The Bangladeshi captain has no sportsman spirit and did not show humanity in the gentleman's game. We never expected this right from his captain to the rest of the team members.
Trevis told BDCricTime.

He added:

Shakib is not welcome in Sri Lanka. If he comes here to play any international or LPL matches, stones will be thrown at him, or he will have to face the annoyance of the fans.

Umpires informed Angelo Mathews of the timed-out threat before the helmet issue

Angelo Mathews, after the incident, criticised Bangladesh and Shakib Al Hasan and also appealed to the ICC to review the case. He also criticised the match officials for not using “common sense”, given that he came late due to equipment malfunction.

As per a report published by ESPNcricinfo, it has been learnt that umpire Richard Illingworth had told Angelo Matthews that he had 30 seconds left to be ready to face his first delivery. Matthews did not inform the on-field umpires, Marais Erasmus and Illingworth and instead signalled toward the dugout for a replacement helmet. As nearly two-and-a-half minutes had elapsed since the wicket of Sadeera Samarawickrama, Shakib decided to appeal to Erasmus.
