On 4th November, Pakistan faced New Zealand in one of their most important matches of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. If they beat New Zealand, they would have increased their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the Pakistan team didn’t bowl well and now have to chase a target of 402. Thanks to Rachin Ravindra’s 3rd century and half century by Kane Williamson, New Zealand score 402. In the process, Shaheen Afridi went wicketless for the first time since 2021, while also conceding 90 runs in his 10 over quota.
The most expensive spell by a Pakistani bowler before this match was previously bowled by Hasan Ali in 2019. He was hit for 84 runs against India in the Old Trafford Stadium, Manchester. Haris Rauf broke this record in this match itself, conceding 85 runs. Just a few minutes later, Shaheen Afridi finished his spell and bowled the most expensive spell. He conceded 90 runs, being hit for 11 boundaries and 2 sixes.
Chasing 402, Pakistan lost opener Abdullah Shafique early to Tim Southee for only 4 runs. Captain Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman now have to build a partnership to make sure Pakistan are still in contention to win the match. If they do lose, their chances of being eliminated from the competition increases.
Netizens slam Shaheen Afridi after disastrous performance
Just a few days after reaching the top of the ICC ODI bowlers ranking, Shaheen was hit for 90 runs by the Kiwi batters. Along with him, bowlers like Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali were not spared, as they were hit for 82 and 85.
Many fans made fun of Shaheen Afridi after his record breaking spell. Fans laughed at the fact that the number one bowler was hit for so much. Indian fans on X also took digs at Pakistani fans, who claimed Shaheen was better than all Indian pacers.
