Despite FAILING in both matches against West Indies, Wasim Jaffer backs Ajinkya Rahane to replace Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain
Jaffer opined that if the 35-year-old counters his consistency issues, he will cement his spot again for India.

Ajinkya Rahane earned another call to make his Test comeback after his exploits in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was called in for the all-important World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia and did add a few runs on the scoreboard when other Indian batters produced a flop show.
He was then included in the two-match Test series in West Indies, however, his bat didn’t make the talking at all. Indian batters were dominant throughout the series but Rahane’s contribution in the first innings of the first Test was just three runs and he scored eight runs in the second Test.
But despite that, former India batter Wasim Jaffer believes Rahane can be India’s next captain after Rohit Sharma. There is no doubt that Rahane has captaincy abilities, but Jaffer opined that if the 35-year-old counters his consistency issues, he will cement his spot again for India.
“Consistency has been an issue, he will have to overcome it because India have a good captaincy option in him after Rohit Sharma is done,” Jaffer said on JioCinema. Jaffer also praised Rahane for reinventing himself in the IPL and warned him that he will face difficulties if he doesn’t score runs.
Wasim Jaffer thinks Cheteshwar Pujara’s Test career is over
India’s No.3 batter in Test, Cheteshwar Pujara, has been dropped from the ongoing West Indies series. This came after his below-par show in the WTC Final.
That is why Wasim Jaffer feels that even if Pujara tries to force a comeback by playing domestic cricket, it would be difficult for him to find a place when talented youngsters like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal look promising. It’s worth noting that Gill used to open for India in Tests alongside captain Rohit Sharma but as Pujara is absent from the team, Gill approached coach Rahul Dravid to be given the No.3 spot, while Jaiswal started opening for India.
