During the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday (May 6), the former’s wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik seemed to have obstructed the field. But as the opponent team didn’t appeal, Karthik continued to play.

RCB couldn’t capitalize on the solid start they give courtesy of Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, and Mahipal Lomror. Karthik was expected to contribute a few more runs to take his side past 200. However, he played a short knock of 11 runs from nine balls before was dismissed.

But prior to his dismissal, he got involved in something which would have sent him to packing even earlier. He would have almost got himself run out while trying to steal a single. But he saved himself by running in the line of the opponent attempting to run him out.

What does MCC’s law say about obstructing the field?

This happened when Karthik was batting with Mahipal Lomror and seemingly changed his line while returning and it made it difficult for the fielding side to attempt a run-out. And though DC skipper David Warner looked angry and seemed to have said something to Karthik because of this act, he decided not to appeal for it.

According to MCC’s Law 37.1.1 on Obstructing the Field, “Either batter is out Obstructing the field if, except in the circumstances of 37.2, and while the ball is in play, he/she willfully attempts to obstruct or distract the fielding side by word or action.”

Talking about the match, RCB posted 181/4 with the help of the top order’s batting. DC displayed one of the brutal run chases as they completed the target in just 16.4 overs. Phil Salt’s assault was the reason behind DC’s thumping win over the visitors with his scintillating 45-ball 87 runs.
