Sri Lanka defeated the world no. 1 Test team by an innings and 39 runs which helped them draw the two-match series 1-1. After the first dissapointed Test where the visitors thrash the Lankans by 10 wickets, the latter came back strongly and won the match. The heroes of the match were Dinesh Chandimal and Prabath Jayasuriya.

Chandimal brilliantly scored a double century, which also made him the first player to do so from his country against Australia. The record was first held by Kumar Sangakkara, who had scored 192 runs against Australia.

Prabath Jayasuriya, meanwhile, was the debutant but he scalped six wickets in both the innings, with the figures finally ending in 12-177 making him the first debutant to have this record.

Australia also lost first spot after their defeat to Sri Lanka. This helped the Lions gain 12 crucial ICC World Test Championship points.

“These are the tours where you learn heaps. We learned heaps during our win last week, unfortunately, it’s through a loss this time. I thought a lot of the guys, either on their first tour here or others who were coming back, everyone found a method that worked. Unfortunately it didn’t work out today. As a batting and bowling group, I think we can go home pretty pleased,” said Aussie Test captain Pat Cummins.

“It’s a good reality check for people touring over here that it’s really hard. So many positives out of last week, that we did find methods that work. One small hiccup doesn’t mean you have to change everything. And it makes for more learning than after a win. Some batters went out with a really clear plan, and you just get a ball with your name on it earlier than you would’ve liked,” he added.
