India‘s inability to play the pacers on a pitch that provided a lot of bounce was exposed during the World Test Championship (WTC) Final. Barring Ajinkya Rahane in the first innings, the star-studded Indian batting line-up simply faltered against Australia’s fast and furious bowlers and ended up with a humiliating 209-run defeat.
This invited criticism from all corners of the country. Twitter was filled with fans’ laments over this loss and another missed opportunity for India to become a world champion. The Indian fans had high hopes after witnessing the Border Gavaskar Trophy series between the same teams at the start of this year, expecting the ‘Ultimate Test’ to be a thrilling contest. However, unfortunately, it ended up being a lopsided one with the Aussies having the momentum throughout the five days.
Speaking on India’s batting, England captain Nasser Hussain reportedly expressed his disappointment with the Indian batters, saying that Rohit Sharma-led batting line-up should learn how to play pacers like how Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson do. “Really disappointed with the Indian batters; their fans might come after me for saying this, but I think the Indian top order needs to look at Babar and Kane on how to play the pacers when the ball is moving around. Both of them do it so late,” he reportedly said on Sky Sports.
However, a post by a Twitter user revealed that Hussain did not utter these words and fake reports have been circulating on social media.
Australia crowned with all four ICC titles after WTC Final win
After winning the toss, India captain Rohit Sharma opted to bowl first which saw Australia posting a daunting 469-run total in the first innings courtesy of Steve Smith and Travis Head’s centuries. Aussie’s star-studded pacers then ran through the Indian batting lineup, bundling them out for 269 runs.
With a massive lead, the Aussies would post 270/8d before sending all Indian batters to packing for 234 runs on the final Day and winning the match by a massive 209 runs. This saw Australia become the first country to be crowned as the world champion across all the ICC tournaments.
