The campaign of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has come to an end, meaning their dream to lift the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL) is still unfulfilled. On Sunday (May 21), defending champions Gujarat Titans’ (GT) domineering show outclassed the hosts at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru by six wickets after driving past a 198-run target, courtesy of Shubman Gill’s praiseworthy century.
RCB’s defeat made Mumbai Indians‘ (MI) path clear of any difficulties in qualifying for the playoffs. MI, during the afternoon, needed to secure a win, which they did perfectly, displaying their batting prowess while chasing a huge 201 to win the match by eight wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
With MI winning the game, RCB needed to do much more to have the advantage of the Net Run Rate. However, luck wasn’t with RCB despite the team’s former captain Virat Kohli’s record-breaking seventh IPL ton, leaving him, his teammates, and supporters disappointed and disheartened. Finally the 34-year-old broke silence after that bitter exit from the cash-rich league by penning down a heartfelt note on Instagram.
“A season which had it’s moments but unfortunately we fell short of the goal. Disappointed but we must hold our heads high. To our loyal supporters, grateful for backing us every step of the way. A big thank you to the coaches, management and my teammates. We aim to be back stronger,” he wrote on Instagram.
IPL 2023 was fulfilling for Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli as a batter, had a decent IPL 2023 season, for he hammered two centuries, six fifties, collecting 639 runs from 14 matches at an average of 53.25 and a strike rate of 139. The two centuries came in two back-to-back matches, at a time when RCB needed the most. He stands third in the Orange Cap list, behind Faf du Plessis and Shubman Gill.
The Delhi-born batter has now eight centuries in T20 cricket- one international and seven IPL centuries. In his T20 career, the former India captain has amassed 11,965 runs in 374 matches so far.
