Virat Kohli will be playing his 500 international match when he will walk into the field for the second Test match against West Indies in Port of Spain, Trinidad on Thursday (July 20). As the cricket fraternity and his die-hard fans started congratulating the talismanic Indian batter, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra ended up calling Kohli a monk.

Kohli made his debut for India against Sri Lanka back in 2008 and has played 110 Tests, 274 ODIs, and 115 T20Is. From these matches, he has collected more than 25,000 runs. And that is why, Chopra is thankful for Kohli’s contribution to Indian cricket.

Virat Kohli’s dedication to the game is very evident and in fact defines him. The way he has lived his life like a monk where it has only been about cricket,” said Chopra on JioCinema, adding that he and the cricket fraternity are thankful for whatever Kohli has given to the sport.

This match against West Indies will make Kohli the fourth Indian (after Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Rahul Dravid) as well as the overall 10th player to add 500 international caps to his name. In his 499th match (in the first Test against West Indies), the 34-year-old scored 76 runs, aiding in India’s victory by an innings and 141 runs.

Virat Kohli, at 34, continues to be a driving force for India. Though the next month will mark the completion of Kohli’s 15 years of service for the Men in Blue, the Chase Master is only behind Sachin Tendulkar when it comes to most runs scored in international cricket as an Indian, and stands sixth on the list amongst international cricketers.

And before his playing his 500th international match, India head coach Rahul Dravid revealed the secret of Kohli’s longevity. And unsurprisingly, the reason behind the Delhi-born batting legend’s immense success and his being an inspiration for many players is his, as per Dravid, the “effort and work he puts behind the scenes when no one’s watching“. Dravid said Kohli’s hard work behind the scene and his willingness to make sacrifices to improve his game is nothing short of inspiring.
