Ever since India suffered a humiliating defeat to Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final last month, the cries of replacing Rohit Sharma as the Test captain have been growing. Many experts have suggested that Rohit should give up on captaincy in the longest format. Former India cricketer and BCCI Chief Selector MSK Prasad has also put forth Virat Kohli’s name for the job.

Sharma, who is at the twilight of his career has already lost the T20I captaincy to Hardik Pandya and might also lose the ODI captaincy after the 2023 World Cup. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has persisted with Rohit as the Test captain. The 36-year-old will lead India in the two-match Test series against the West Indies.

But Prasad feels that if the selectors can name Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain in Tests, there is no harm in reappointing Virat Kohli as the captain.

“Why not Virat Kohli? When Ajinkya Rahane can come back and become the vice-captain, then why not Virat Kohli? I don’t know what the mindset of Virat is on captaincy. In case selectors are thinking beyond Rohit, I don’t know whether they are thinking but if they are thinking beyond Rohit, then I think Virat can also be an option,” Prasad told Khelnow.

Although many experts as well as the fans have been demanding Virat Kohli’s reappointment as India’s Test captain, the 34-year-old is unlikely to take the job back. Kohli gave up on the Test captaincy after India lost to South Africa in 2021. The decision had its own controversial reasons. Nevertheless, Kohli resigned and also pledged to not come back.

Kohli ended his tenure as India’s most successful captain. Not only did Kohli lead India in the most number of matches, but he also won the most number of games for the country. In 68 Tests played as captain, Kohli won 48. The 34-year-old almost led India to a series win in England.
