Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt gave his verdict surrounding India’s experiments with youngster Ishan Kishan. Butt feels the Indian management has not assured Kishan his place in the squad despite his scoring a double-century.

Currently, there are three openers available for India- Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Kishan. And if KL Rahul is available, he will be the fourth option. Rahul is finding it hard to score runs, due to which captain Rohit and Gill started opening and it worked well.

Kishan, on the other hand, slammed a double century against Bangladesh but failed to get a chance in the playing XI in the next series against Sri Lanka. And against New Zealand, he came in the middle order. But the management this time gave Kishan the chance to open alongside Gill against West Indies. While Rohit came to bat down the order in the first match, he was rested for the next two. Kishan scored fifty-plus runs in all three matches, which is why Butt feels despite his performances, Indian teams are confused about how to use Kishan.

I absolutely agree (that India’s experiments with Ishan were confusing). The guy was dropped after scoring 200…What’s the point? Either they accept the fact that he is second option, even if he scores 1000 runs in a single innings,” Butt said on his official YouTube channel.

He added that being considered a second or third option doesn’t give a player confidence that he will be rewarded for his performance. He feels Kishan must be thinking currently that no matter how much he scores, he will still be India’s second option as an opener.

While chasing West Indies’ paltry 115-run target, Ishan Kishan, with seven fours and a maximum, played a knock of 52 runs from 46 balls at a strike rate of 113.04. He single-handedly drove India toward the target.

Then in the second ODI, India ended up scoring just 181 before they were bundled out in 40.5 overs. Kishan was the only one who scored his half-century. He took 55 balls to score 55 runs with a six and six boundaries at a strike rate of 100. India lost the match later.

In the decider match, Kishan again crossed the 50-run mark. This time, he scored 77 runs from 64 balls with eight fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 120.31, helping India reach 351/5.
