In match number 28 of this year’s T20 World Cup 2022, Bangladesh played underdogs Zimbabwe at The Gabba in Brisbane. Bangladeshi captain Shakib Al Hassan won the toss and choose to bat in a match that was considered complete value for money.
Bangladeshi batsman Najmul Hossain Shanto opened the innings with Soumya Sarkar who departed early after scoring a duck in 2 balls. Shanto was partnered on the crease by Litton Das and also captain Shakib Al Hassan as he later exited after making a valuable contribution of 71 runs. Afif Hossain came in for his quick-fire 29 of 19 and Bangladesh was able to put up a score of 150 for the loss of 7.
Richard Nagrava and Blessing Muzarbani took 2 wickets each with Sikandar Raza and Sean Williams grabbing 1 for themselves as they came out to bat. The opening pair could not survive on the pitch for too long as they departed cheaply courtesy of Taskin Ahmad. Captain Sean Williams gave the Bangladeshi fans a reason to worry as he stayed on the pitch till the very end.
He played a captain’s knock scoring 64 off 42, and it looked like he would win the game for his side. But, Shakib showed exemplary athleticism to run him out which had a major blow on the Zimbabweans. The game had its own plans as Zimbabwe needed 5 of the last ball and Muzarabani was facing Mosaddek. However, the former was only able to take a single.
Their supporters started celebrating and shaking hands after which the TV third umpire signaled it as a no-ball since the keeper collected the ball in front of the stumps. Zimbabwe had another chance but they couldn’t grab it as they lost by 3 runs ultimately.
