In match number 25 of 47 in the T20 World Cup 2022, New Zealand faced Asia Cup 2022 winners Sri Lanka. The match was played on the Sydney Cricket ground where The Kiwis won the toss and decided to bat first.

Maheesh Theekshana and Dhananjaya de Silva struck early to send home Fabian Allen and the in-form Devon Conway. Captain Kane Williamson too went early after scoring 8 of 13, as he was caught by Kusal Mendis and bowled by Kasun Rajitha. The captain has struggled in his past few matches and will be hoping to build upon his reputation in the coming games.

The talking point of the game was when Glenn Phillips became the second Kiwi batsman after Brendon McCullum to score a century in a World Cup. Phillips made sure that no bowlers from Sri Lanka should remain economical as he scored 104 of 64, and eventually became a victim of Lahiru Kumara’s delivery.

New Zealand posted a total of 167 for the loss of 7. Sri Lanka started their innings in an awful manner as they lost both their openers cheaply. Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva were not able to contribute much to the total as well. Bhanuka Rajapaksa and captain Dasun Shanaka added some valuable runs after which both of them departed as well.

Lankans slumped badly and their tenth wicket fell at 102 while they were 66 runs behind the target. Trent Boult was the star performer with his spell ending at 4 overs 13 runs and 4 wickets, but this fine display of bowling couldn’t overshadow Phillips’ heroics who became the man of the match.

Well, Glenn Philips was not only the talking point among the Twitterati’s for his amazing ton, but also a moment where he was appreciated for maintaining the spirit of the game as he dropped his bat while Lahiru Kumara was in rhythm to bowl and did not get up till he had bowled the delivery just to make sure he doesn’t get distracted.

It’s again an amazing win for the Kiwi and they are being considered by everyone now as the tournament favorites while Sri Lanka has not been able to replicate the form they showed at the Asia cup.
