“Can’t even qualify for the airport” – Fans troll Australia as England beat Sri Lanka to secure a semi-final spot in the T20 World Cup
Australia, England and Sri Lanka
As the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 reaches its final stages, the matches tend to get more crucial. Similarly, on November 5th, 2022, England played sub-continent giants Sri Lanka. While this match was important for the team from Europe, host nation Australia were banking on a Sri Lankan victory in their bid to qualify for the semi-finals. The match begun with Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka winning the toss and electing to bat first.
In a high scoring Sydney pitch, Pathum Nissanka gave the England bowlers a rough time which made Australian fans happy with regards to their team’s qualification. But on the other end of the pitch, Sri Lankan batsmen were hardly spending time on the crease. 84 runs in 10.3 overs was good to start with, but the next 9.3 were where the English bowlers buckled up and the Lankan batsmen lost their composure.
In a total of 141 runs for the whole team, 67 runs were scored by Nissanka alone. Mark Wood was the star bowler as he bowled only 3 overs and took 3 wickets as other bowlers except for Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali grabbed a wicket each. Alex Hales and Joss Buttler started the English innings strongly as the opening duo set up a 75-run partnership when the captain departed for 28 of 23.
Dawid Malan suffered a groin injury before the match, so Ben Stokes came in at 3 while on the other end the next 5 batsmen added a combined total of just 20 runs. The spin trio of Wanindu Hasaranga, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Maheesh Theekshana helped the Sri Lankan bowling unit.
The match went till the last over as Stokes being Mr. Dependent stayed on the pitch for his 42 of 36 to take the game in favor of England. Last tournament’s champion and also this year’s host nation Australia are out of the tournament with New Zealand and England qualifying from group 1.
Fans hilariously troll Australia as England dominates Sri Lanka to land a place above them.
There were many talking points from today as fans on Twitter showed love and filled the social media platform with wishes to Indian ace Virat Kohli on his birthday. England fans were happy with their victory against Sri Lanka. The only group of fans that were not happy were the Australian fans as they couldn’t digest the fact that their team is out of the tournament.
Finally today after the 39th match of the tournament, group 1 is the first to deliver 2 semifinalists in New Zealand and England. The two countries now wait for tomorrow with South Africa and India fighting to decide who takes the first and the second spot in group 2 of the super 12. As the tournament comes to a close, fans would certainly hope the matches are value for money.
