Hardik Pandya likely to take over white-ball captaincy: Reports

Hardik Pandya

All-rounder Hardik Pandya is likely to be named India’s new white-ball captain in the coming weeks. Ever since India’s poor exit from the T20 World Cup 2022, there were reports that the BCCI might hand over the T20I captaincy to him. But as per latest developments, the Baroda-based cricketer will get the command of the ODI team as well.

It has been learnt that the governing body is worried about Rohit Sharma‘s fitness as he has been missing games due to injuries for a while now. He recently sustained a thumb injury, which made him unavailable of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh. With the ODI World Cup 2023 just a year ago, BCCI wants a stable leader.

The BCCI has already discussed their plans with Hardik Pandya, who has asked for some days to think and reply. If he agrees to lead the pack in both formats, he is likely to be named the new skipper. However, the final decision will be taken by the newly-appointed selection committee for Men’s international side.

Hardik Pandya is likely to lead the Indian side in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka as injured Rohit Sharma may require more time to recover. The series will begin on January 3 in Mumbai. Although it’s still unclear whether the current Indian captain will step down from the role or the matter might be put on hold for now.

The matter of the change of captaincy wasn’t discussed in the Apex Council meeting. “The matter wasn’t even on the Apex Council agenda and it wasn’t discussed on the forum. Only the selection committee can take a call on captaincy,” a BCCI official privy to development told news agency PTI on the condition of anonymity.
