Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday (September 22) announced the squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup, starting October 5 in India. Babar Azam will captain the side while Shadab Khan will be his deputy.
The big blow Pakistan received before the ODI World Cup was the injury of star pacer Naseem Shah. The 20-year-old injured his shoulder during a match against India in the recently concluded 2023 Asia Cup. He has been advised to undergo surgery which means he can be off competitive cricket for three to four months.
In his place, Pakistan chose veteran pacer Hasan Ali. Hasan last played an ODI match in June 2022. But he last played for Pakistan in any format in a Test match earlier this year against New Zealand in Karachi.
“We were forced to make one change because of an unfortunate injury to Naseem Shah. We had a few injury scares in the recent Asia Cup, but I am glad to share that all the players are fully fit and are eager to perform for their country in the all-important tournament,” Inzamam-Ul-Haq, Pakistan’s chief selector, said in a release.
PCB also called in extra leg spinner, Usama Mir, who made his debut in the ODI earlier this year. Faheem Ashraf misses out while pacer Mohammad Haris has been kept in the reserve.

Though Pakistan stand atop the Rankings of the best ODI teams, their performance in the Asia Cup shook them a lot as they registered two defeats in the Super Four stage which saw them eliminated from the continental tournament. Also, Naseem Shah’s injury was also the reason why Pakistan announced their squad late.
