Hyderabad recently got promoted back to the Elite division of the Ranji Trophy, beating Meghalaya in final of the Ranji Plate division. They had been relegated the season before, failing to win a single match. Hyderabad returned to the Elite division within a year.

After beating Meghalaya by five wickets in the Ranji Plate finals, Hyderabad Cricket Association President and Chairman, Jagan Mohan Rao, announced on X that the team will be receiving a BMW car and ₹1 crore if they win the prestigious Ranji Trophy within the next three years. He claims this is to motivate the players and as he knows winning the Ranji trophy immediately isn’t easy, he has given them three years.

The Tilak Varma-led team have not lost a single match in the Ranji Plate group so far, winning all of their games. Along with that, they received an extra point each game for either winning by an innings, or winning by 10-wickets. The HCA president has also announced that the team has been given a ₹10 Lakh reward, with ₹50,000 given to stand out performers.

What is the Ranji Plate group?

Till 2003, the Ranji Trophy was played in groups which were divided on zone basis. There were five zones, them being East, West, North, South and Central. That format was then changed into a two-tier format, which included two sub-groups in each division. In 2008, teams in the Plate groups now could qualify to contest in the Ranji knockouts, but that was removed in 2012.

Currently there are 38 teams contesting in the on-going Ranji Trophy, with only six teams in the Plate group. The top four of the six play in the Plate knockouts, which includes semifinals and finals. The teams that reach the finals get promotion to the Super League. In 2024, the teams that have gotten promotion are Hyderabad and Meghalaya, while Goa and Manipur have been relegated.
