On the morning of 11th August, 2023, news spread across the internet that Zimbabwean all rounder Heath Streak had passed away. Reports stated that Streak was battling cancer of the liver and colon since May and was getting treatment in South Africa.
Tributes and condolences poured in from all over the cricketing world. Many remembered the all rounder and former captain as one of the greatest Zimbabwean players of all time and was how he was a fan favorite at the time.
A couple of hours after the news broke out about his passing away, Streak found out he was dead for the entire world. He texted his teammate, Henry Olonga, “Very much alive.. P[lea]se revert this run out IMMEDIATELY buddy”. Olonga shared a screenshot of that text and confirmed that Heath Streak was in fact alive.
Heath Streak later gave an interview to Sportstar and confirmed to them that he was alive and recovering from cancer. “Suddenly I get to know that people have started talking about my death, as someone shared it on social media.
But that was not all correct. I am recovering and feeling a lot better, “ said Streak. “I am at home and obviously there’s still a bit of strain because of the treatment. But otherwise I am fine. People should be a bit more careful before spreading such rumours. I am better now and recovering from cancer,” added Streak.
Streak was the captain of Zimbabwe during their Golden Era
49-year-old Heath Streak was an integral part of the golden era of Zimbabwean cricket. The team was filled with stars like Henry Olonga, Andy Flower, Grant Flower, Heath Streak, etc. After a political crisis during the 2003 ODI World Cup, the team started to decline with many important players retiring or fleeing the country.
Heath Streak captained the Zimbabwe team from 2000 to 2004, winning 4 Tests and 18 ODIs in that period. He led the team to the Super 6 stage in the 2003 ODI World Cup. He was sacked from the team in 2004, but returned to the team in 2005. Heath Streak retired after playing 6 ODIs in 2005.
