“A World Cup full of shockers!”-Historic victory for Ireland as they thrash England in an amusing fashion
Ireland defeat England
Ireland now have two unforgettable victories over England in the World Cup matches. When Andy Balbirnie-led Ireland faced Jos Buttler’s England, the latter were reduced to 105/5 before rain abandoned the match. As per the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, five runs were needed by England to win the match which they couldn’t due to the rain, and Ireland ended up winning by five runs on Wednesday [October 23] at the MCG in Melbourne.
Balbirnie played a captain’s innings in this important game. He scored 62 runs off 47 balls with five fours and two sixes, while Lorcan Tucker also played a 27-ball 34-run knock to guide the team to 157 all out in 19.2 overs.
During England’s chase, they lost quick wickets. To the great relief of the Irish side, English skipper Jos Buttler was dismissed for a duck by Joshua Little, and the latter also sent back another opener Alex Hales (seven runs off five balls).
Fionn Hand took care of Ben Stokes in the sixth over, while George Dockrell sent back Harry Brook in the 11th over. Dawid Malan tried to stabilize the innings but he had to depart on the first ball of the 14th over. Barry McCarthy was the bowler who delivered a short one outside off. Malan shuffled across, he looked to thump the ball towards the leg side but on a thick outside edge.
The ball flew to Hand at third man and he grabbed a fine catch. Liam Livingstone was the next batter and Moeen Ali (24* off 12 balls with three fours and a six) tried to take England further before the rain stopped further proceedings Ireland ended up winning the match by five runs according to the DLS method. This is their second World Cup match win against England; the first one was in the 50-over World Cup in 2011 at Bangalore.
