On Thursday (April 27) Sunrisers Hyderabad‘s (SRH) social media handles shared an injury update on Washington Sundar. The all-rounder will no longer be part of the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a hamstring injury.

“Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the IPL 2023 due to a hamstring injury. Speedy recovery, Washi,” SRH wrote on Twitter.

Sundar, who was signed by the Hyderabad-based franchise for INR 8.75 crore, played seven matches this season and had started delivering his best. He has so far scored 60 runs from five matches and picked up three wickets.

Notably, this is Sundar’s third consecutive injury-interrupted season. In 2021, a finger injury forced him to pull out of the league which was held in UAE. He would then miss a couple of games for the Orange Army last year due to split webbing in his bowling hand.

Who can replace Washington Sundar?

Huge blow for SRH as hamstring injury rules Washington Sundar out of IPL 2023

SRH has been dealing with a poor season, being placed ninth on the points table with just two wins from seven matches. Now, Sundar’s omission from the team will be another headache for the franchise.

But the 2016 IPL winner will try to put things back on track by bringing in another all-rounder to replace Sundar. They haven’t yet announced the same regarding the replacement but Shreyas Gopal or Sanjay Yadav can occupy Sundar’s place.

Sanjay Yadav was the Player of the Tournament in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) for his amassing 452 runs. He previously was part of the Mumbai Indians (MI) but they released him ahead of IPL 2023 auction. Shreyas Gopal was part of SRH last year. He has experience in the bowling department in domestic cricket and can also bat in the lower order.
