India defeated Australia in their 2023 ODI World Cup campaign opener by winning the match by six runs, thanks to heroics from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul on October 8 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. When India, at one point were tethering at 2-3 in 2 overs, Kohli and Rahul took the responsibility on their shoulders, and slowly, without losing a wicket for a long time, they took India past the target.

After winning the toss, Australia chose to bat first but their sluggish innings took them to 199 in 49.3 overs. Six Aussie batters became victims of Indian spin trio Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Kuldeep Yadav.

India had an easy target in front of them and the match looked a bit one-sided. But Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood turned the table and one expected a thrilling contest. But India did not lose further wickets for a long time.

Kohli and Rahul kept the scoreboard running and slowly completed their respective half-centuries. Before Kohli could score his ton, Hazlewood trapped him with the help of Marnus Labuschagne‘s catch. In 116 balls, the 34-year-old scored 85 runs, with six boundaries. Rahul missed his century by three runs as he remained unbeaten on 97 runs.

After this match, Australia’s next assignment is against South Africa on October 12. India will next face Afghanistan on October 11 before meeting Babar Azam and company on October 11.
