Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shikhar Dhawan took a jibe at commentator Harsha Bhogle after his valiant knock against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday. As Dhawan slammed a 66-ball 99* he was named the Player of the Match. However, Punjab Kings lost the game as SRH chased down a mediocre target of 143 with 17 balls to spare.

Nevertheless, it was a knock of the ages from Dhawan as the southpaw single-handedly propelled his team to a respectable total. Despite wickets falling from the other end, Dhawan kept scoring runs and finished the innings one shy of a century. While the opening batter played cautiously initially, Dhawan accelerated at the fag end and finished the innings with a strike rate of 150.

Dhawan then took a jibe at Bhogle for criticizing the batter for his knock against Rajasthan Royals. As Bhogle was interviewing the batter after the match, Dhawan asked if Bhogle was happy with his strike rate.

“I hope you were happy with my strike rate as you tweeted something. I can bowl googlies as well!” Dhawan said after the match.

While the commentator laughed it out then, he shed light on this conversation with Dhawan and called it a “mature chat”.

“Had a lovely chat with Shikhar post game, always easy conversation with him, where he said he was trying to play shots the other day but struggled. And that the form of Prabhsimran and his own calmness and experience allowed him to ride over the situation. We have mature chats,” tweeted Bhogle.

Earlier, Bhogle had criticized Dhawan for starting slow against RR despite other batters going hard at the other end. “Shikhar Dhawan’s innings will raise, should raise, the question of whether you can have an anchor batter, especially in these conditions. You can appear to have increased your strike rate by the end, but the 30 balls at run-a-ball can hurt,” Harsha Bhogle had opined.

The Punjab Kings captain then talked about the defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad. Dhawan held his batter accountable for the loss. The PBKS captain said that the team lost back-to-back wickets, pushing them onto the back foot.

“As a batting unit, we lost too many wickets back-to-back and couldn’t put up a big total on the ground and because of that we lost the game. 175-180 would have been a reasonable score. The wicket looked quite good but it was seaming and swinging,” Dhawan said at the post-match presentation.

Notably, this was Punjab Kings’ first defeat at IPL 2023. The Shikhar Dhawan-led team had defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their first two matches. The Kings will now face Gujarat Titans (GT) on the 13th of April.
