Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root

Both Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow slammed tons to lead England’s mammoth chase of 378 against India on Day 5 at Edgbaston of the rescheduled fifth Test. At stumps on Day 4, England’s score read 259/3 with both these players at the crease, needing only 119 runs on Day 5 to win the fifth Test of the Pataudi Trophy.

The fifth Test started with England opting to bowl first because of the overcast weather. India started slow by losing five wickets for 98 runs before Rishabh Pant unleashed as assault on the English bowlers. He scored an impressive 146 runs off just 111 balls to revive India’s innings.

The next day saw the ‘sword’ celebration of Ravindra Jadeja when he slammed his third Test ton. After his dismissal, Jasprit Bumrah slammed 36 runs off just 19 balls by creating a world record of scoring 29 runs in an over of Stuart Broad by breaking legendary cricketer Brian Lara’s record of 28 runs in an over. Stuart Broad also created an unwanted word record by conceding 35 runs in over.

Day 3 started with former India skipper Virat Kohli sledging Bairstow before the latter impressed everyone with a fine ton. But England could only score 284. Rishabh Pant had been impressive in India’s second innings also, he scored 57 runs off 86 balls and Cheteshwar Pujara scored 66 runs off 168 balls. The score helped to add 245 runs to give a target of 378 to England.

England’s chase started well without rain. Alex Lees and Zak Crawley played knocks of 56 and 46 runs respectively before an unbreakable 269-run partnership off 315 balls between Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow ensured England a 7-wicket victory. Root scored an excellent 142 runs off 173 balls with 19 fours and a six while Bairstow scored 114 runs off 145 balls with 15 fours and a six. Only Jasprit Bumrah could scalp two wickets.

Congratulations England on your highest successful run chase.
India have quite a few issues to address, only Pujara & Pant from the top 6 scoring runs and Jadeja batting brilliantly, but need batsman to be in form. Bowling in the fourth innings was absolutely listless #INDvsENG

Special win by England to level the series.

Joe Root & Jonny Bairstow have been in sublime form and made batting look very easy.

Congratulations to England on a convincing victory. @Bazmccullum #ENGvIND pic.twitter.com/PKAdWVLGJo

First time since 1939 that England have had two centurions or more in the 4th innings of a test – back to back hundreds for JONNY BAIRSTOW and a hundred for the great JOE ROOT, it's his 9th test ton vs IND overall – what a chase this has been , ENGLAND'S NEW ERA STARTED 🥵❤️ – pic.twitter.com/R3Hy4E84RN

A month ago, neither Joe Root nor Jonny Bairstow had a fourth innings hundred in Test cricket. Now they have two each, as well as a 70+ red inker each in a successful chase.

Joe Root living in dream. Bairstow in another dimension and this is what we call one of the greatest comeback in history. Better cricket played by Brits. History created. This Test Victory is greater and better than Ind vs Aus gabba test #INDvENG #CricketTwitter pic.twitter.com/HqAeykLt4k

Proud to be an England cricket fan today, Joe Root is one of the greatest English cricketers of all time and Bairstow is astounding. As a side they are all heralding in a transformative of the narrative of test match cricket. Shane Warne would have loved this too💙🏏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 #ENGvsIND

I bloody love Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Brendan McCullum, the England cricket team and cricket as a sport itself wow

— Alasdair 🇳🇦 (@kohli_fraud) July 5, 2022

The turnaround in Jonny Bairstow is just ridiculous. Joe Root is the greatest English player of all time and Jimmy Anderson is still world-class.

Special mention to Lees and Crawley who set this ridiculous run chase up as well.

I LOVE BAZ-BALL ❤️
