New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who has been recovering from injury, shared a glimpse of his batting in the nets on Tuesday (August 1). Williamson picked up a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while fielding near the boundary ropes for the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL).
He then underwent surgery in April. There were doubts about his availability for the upcoming 2023 ICC ODI World Cup in India, but his recovery process seems to be quicker. He took to Instagram to share how glad he is to finally do some batting. “Nice to be back in the nets with the bat in hand for a few throws,” Williamson wrote.

In New Zealand, several media reports say, if Williamson is unable to recover in time, he would travel with the team as a mentor. Williamson had previously led the Black Caps to the final of the 2019 ODI World Cup where they faced defeat from England.

Kane Williamson was playing his first match of the 2023 IPL for the GT. He was also representing GT in that match for the first time after the franchise signed the Kiwi skipper in the auction following his release from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
While fielding near the boundary, Williamson landed awkwardly on the ground while going for the catch in GT’s match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Though he failed to catch the ball, he did save two runs.
Meanwhile, New Zealand will face defending champions England on October 5, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The match will also be the tournament opener. In 2019, New Zealand were on the cusp of a historic win but England secured the victory via the boundary countback rule.
