Kapil Dev; Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
India captain Rohit Sharma and former captain Virat Kohli have been key players of India for many years. They are amongst the best batters in the world right now but runs don’t come consistently from their bats. That is why some consider that youngsters should step in to take the team forward. And 1983 World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev is one of them.
Rohit hasn’t scored a ton in ODI for two years now, while Kohli ended his century drought when he slammed his first hundred after over three years in the 2022 Asia Cup against Afghanistan. His ODI century, after a long time, came against Bangladesh last month.
Rohit is nearing 37 and Kohli will be 35 by the end of this year’s World Cup. It’ll be difficult for them to play another World Cup. That is why Mr. Dev believes it’s time to give the talented youngsters the responsibility to take the team as a team can’t revolve around just Kohli and Rohit.

The World Cup winner explained that the 2023 ODI World Cup in India can be Kohli and Rohit’s last tournament. But Mr. Dev doesn’t think Kohli and Rohit can’t play another World Cup, only that they’ll need to work really hard as fitness will play a key role in deciding that.
“If you want to win the World Cup, the coach, selectors, and team management will have to make some tough decisions. Personal interests will have to take a backseat and they will need to think about the team,” Mr. Dev told ABP News.
“If you think Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and 2-3 players will win us the World Cup then that’s never going to happen. You should believe in your team. Do we have such a team? Definitely. Do we have certain match winners? Yes, of course! We have players who can win the World Cup,” he added.
Meanwhile, Kohli and Rohit have been given a break, and they are not featured in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka at home. They will return to the side for the ODI series against the same team, starting on Tuesday (January 10).
