On 6th November, Angelo Mathews became the first batter in international cricket to be Timed Out against Bangladesh. He took more than 2 minutes to prepare himself to face his first ball and when Shakib Al Hasan appealed for Timed Out, the umpires gave the wicket.

In the press match conference, Mathews called out the umpires and Shakib for his dismissal and said the umpires should’ve used common sense, as the strap of his helmet broke. But the Marylebone Cricket Club has now released a statement defending the umpire’s decision.

In the statement, the MCC has declared that the umpires were right to declare that Mathews was not ready to face his first delivery within 2 minutes, while also taking in the broken strap in consideration. If the umpires were informed of the malfunction of gear, they could have accepted a delay in getting ready, but Mathews failed to do so.

The MCC also noticed how the Sri Lankan veteran took 90 seconds to enter the 30-yard circle and his helmet strap broke at 1:54. Without consulting the umpires, Mathews called for a replacement helmet and the 2 minutes elapsed. Therefore when Shakib appealed, the umpires had no option but to give Mathews Timed Out.
