Mathematically Pakistan can still qualify for the T20 WC semi-finals, check how

Pakistan

After the last-ball defeat from India and Zimbabwe, Pakistan’s chances to qualify for the semi-finals are hanging on a loose thread but mathematically, they still have a chance. Babar Azam-led Men in Green have to win all three of their remaining matches but they are also heavily relying on the result of other teams’ matches. If Pakistan win the three matches, then they’ll get six points but it’s not enough.

Pakistan registered a four-wicket loss against Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue in their campaign opener. The former went on to lose against Craig Ervine-led Zimbabwe by just one run in their second match. After two defeats, Pakistan are still searching for points and to remain in the race to the semi-finals, they have to win their remaining three matches- against the Netherlands (October 30), South Africa (November 3), and Bangladesh (November 6).

If India, South Africa, and Zimbabwe win two of their remaining matches, Pakistan will get eliminated from the T20 World Cup. The match between India and South Africa is an important one for Pakistan and they’ll want the former to win. Meanwhile, India are sitting comfortably at the top with four points so far.

But if Pakistan defeat South Africa and the latter also face a loss against India, then Proteas’ chance of remaining in the tournament will be very less. South Africa have to lose two of their three matches for Pakistan to qualify for the semis. The same is the case with Zimbabwe; they have to lose two of their three matches.

If Proteas lose to India and Pakistan, they still have an advantage of a better net run rate over Pakistan. Temba Bavuma‘s South Africa have defeated Bangladesh by 104 runs.

In the match between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, the winner will have a strong chance to qualify for the semi-finals. The latter have defeated Pakistan, so Zimbabwe likely have a better chance of winning. Zimbabwe also have a fair chance of qualifying for the semi-finals than South Africa and Pakistan.
