The third day of the New Year’s Test, which is played in the Sydney Cricket Ground, is celebrated as Jane McGrath Day. Jane was Glenn McGrath’s late wife, who died of breast cancer. In her memory, Glenn founded the Jane McGrath foundation, dedicated to raising funds to battle breast cancer. The foundation and Cricket Australia joined together, making every Test played at the SCG the “Pink Test,” to spread awareness of the disease.
In 2024, the same was done. On the third day, the SCG was decorated in pink, with players wearing pink cans and fans wearing clothes of the same color. At the same time, McGrath and his family greeted each player. Most players shake their hands, but Mohammad Rizwan instead folded his hands to the female relatives of the cricketer.
Rizwan didn’t shake his hands as Islam prohibits the opposite genders from physically contacting each other. This is to show they show respect to the opposing gender.
Pakistan collapse ensures Australia series whitewash
Pakistan go without a single win in Australia in 28 years. Despite gaining a lead in the first innings, a stereotypical Pakistan batting collapse won Australia the Test match. Going into their 2nd inning, Pakistan had a lead of 14. They lost 2 out of their top order within 2 overs. Within 26 overs, they lost 7 wickets, with Josh Hazlewood picking up 4.
The Aussies took the remaining three wickets in 17 overs, with Rizwan and Aamer Jamal trying to fight back, but gave the low target of 130. Half centuries by Marnus Labuschagne and David Warner led Australia to the series win and 12 more World Test Championship points.
