India pacer Mohammed Siraj has climbed up to the the top of ICC ODI rankings with 729 rating points for the first time, which he did by dethroning New Zealand’s Trent Boult. Bowling coach Paras Mhambrey made the 28-year-old work on certain areas of his game, which he did and now the hard work has paid off.

Siraj had a stellar performance in recent matches; the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. In the match against New Zealand, where India won the series by 3-0, Siraj picked up five wickets in two games. Adding his five scalps with that of the nine wickets in the Sri Lanka series, Siraj bagged 14 in five ODIs.

After three years, Siraj made a comeback to the ODI setup last February and since then, he scalped 37 wickets in 20 matches. His name could also be found in the ICC ODI Team of the Year list.

He has done really well, he understands what the team is expecting from him,” Rohit said when asked about Siraj. “To come and take the new ball, swing the ball, get early wickets. In the middle overs too, he’s got so much skill. The more he plays, the better he gets,” the Indian skipper added.

Not just this, after India’s 3-0 whitewash of New Zealand at home, there have been several changes in the top batter rankings. India’s in-form youngster Shubman Gill leaped 20 places to a career-best sixth position after his stunning 200-plus against the Black Caps. He even surpassed Virat Kohli who is occupying the seventh place, while Rohit is in the eighth position after his quick ton in the third match against the Kiwis.

India was also crowned No.1 in the ODI rankings after the sweep. They are followed by England and New Zealand. The Men in Blue are now topping the list of ODI as well as T20I rankings, and are second in Test cricket. There’s more joy for India as the destructive Suryakumar Yadav became the ICC T20I Cricketer of the Year 2022.
