MS Dhoni is India’s most successful captain because India won three ICC trophies under his leadership. He is also known to have a shrewd cricketing brain.
His calmness on the field under a tight situation, his ability to trap batters by changing fielding positions, along with the way he grooms youngsters, have given him praises from the cricket fraternity. However, Captain Cool, who leads the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), was asked by another Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise to become their marquee player ahead of the first season.
Dhoni, who led the team to the 2007 World Cup, knew that he would earn a huge amount if he entered the auction. Because of this reason, he rejected the offer of the other franchise.
When the announcement was made for five marquee players, a certain franchise approached me to become one of them. I had to make a quick decision. As the captain of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team, I thought I would easily go for 1 million dollars.MS Dhoni explained on Star Sports
So, I decided to take the risk and attend the auction. If two out of the three teams that didn’t have marquee players showed interest in me, along with the other franchises, this would increase my chances of getting a higher price. He added
Dhoni had a base price of $400,000 and was signed by the CSK for $1.5 million (INR 6 crore) becoming the most expensive player in that auction. Under Dhoni, CSK won the IPL trophy five times.
