On 22nd March, the 17th season the IPL kicked off as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) traveled to Chennai to face Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Many were excited to see the return of MS Dhoni as well, as the Indian legend only played in the IPL.

The match saw MS Dhoni in a new role, as he gave up captaincy and handed it over to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Despite not being captain, he helped out his captain as much as he could and his keeping helped in restricting RCB to 173.

He took the catches of Rajat Patidar and Glenn Maxwell in the 5th and 6th over. He later also got the dangerous Anuj Rawat on the last ball of the innings with an incredible run out. That was also a record-breaking dismissal, as he was involved in the most run-outs in the history of the IPL.

Before the start of the 2024 IPL, MS Dhoni already had the records for the most catches and stumpings in the history of the tournament, and now the most run outs. Since 2008, he has played 251 matches and has taken 206 dismissals. Out of 206, 140 are catches, 42 are stumpings and 24 are run outs. Before him, Ravindra Jadeja held the record.

Electing to bat first, RCB put up 173 runs. They started off strong, as Faf du Plessis scored 35 off 23. He was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman, who then got Rajat Patidar out. Deepak Chahar struck next over, as he got Glenn Maxwell. Virat Kohli and Cameron Green tried putting up a fight but failed. Ultimately, a 95-run partnership by Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik got RCB to their total.

Defending a low target, RCB struggled in the powerplay as Rachin Ravindra scored boundary after boundary. Karn Sharma finally dismissed him for 37, but the damage was done. Ajinkya Rahane scored a quick 27 before getting out to Green. Using the 2 bouncer per over rule, the RCB bowlers started troubling Shivam Dube and Daryl Mitchell, finally getting the Kiwi out.
