After one day of hiatus due to persistent rain, the IPL 2023 Final eventually kicked off on Monday (29 May). Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni won the toss and invited Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans (GT) to bat first. Deepak Chahar opened the bowling for CSK while Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill came to open the innings for the defending champions.

Chahar bowled a good first over, giving away only four runs. Tushar Deshpande was introduced into the attack from the other end and the rookie pacer almost got GT’s main man, Shubman Gill. As Deshpande bowled a good length delivery onto the stumps, Gill tried to flick it but could not keep it down.

The ball flew to Deepak Chahar at square leg who could not pouch the ball safely. The ball hit Chahar’s wrists and popped out. Gill then capitalized on the second chance as he tore apart Deshpande in his second over. Gill hit a hat-trick of fours to pile up on CSK’s misery.

MS Dhoni to CSK’s rescue

With the GT opening pair of Saha and Gill going strong and adding 62 runs in the first six overs, CSK skipper MS Dhoni tossed the ball to Ravindra Jadeja. The veteran spinner did not disappoint his captain as Jadeja got Shubman Gill on the last ball of his first over. But more than Jadeja, it was Dhoni’s wicket as the CSK skipper whipped off the bails in a fraction of a second.

As Jadeja bowled a loopy delivery on the off stump, Gill went for an expensive drive and lost his balance in the process. The ball went past Gill’s outside edge and Dhoni was alert enough to dislodge the bails before Gill dragged his backfoot back into the crease.
