Sri Lanka legend Muttiah Muralitharan criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for high ticket prices for matches of the 2023 Asia Cup. During most of the matches, spectators opted out of coming to the stadium.

Even during India’s match against Pakistan, around 10,000 spectators came to the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo despite the stadium having a capacity of 35000 spectators. So what is the reason behind this disappointing spectacle? Muralitharan pointed out that amid the ongoing final crisis at the island nation, people are finding it hard to purchase tickets.

Sri Lanka Cricket Board also requested a reduction in prices and despite the reduction before the India-Pakistan match, the stadium looked empty. The reason could be seasonal rainfall and ticket prices.

Sri Lanka is currently going through a financial crisis. The ticket prices are really expensive, and they were reduced at the last moment (just before the India vs. Pakistan match in Colombo) but it doesn’t work that way. The ticket prices start from Sri Lankan Rupees 6000 and upwards. If you want to watch the match from the grandstands it is 40000 to 50000 Sri Lankan Rupees, which is equivalent to a person’s monthly salary,” Muralitharan said to Cricket Pakistan.

India are currently locking horns with Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After winning the toss, India opted to bat first. The match started at its scheduled time but post 40 overs, heaven opened up and the match halted for a while.

The game resumed after a while but rainfall is again expected in Colombo. If the match gets called off, then both Sri Lanka and India will share a point each. This will make India’s road to the final difficult and the net run rate to decide the finalist will come into play.
