The Mumbai Cricket Association decided to honor Mumbai and Indian cricket legend, Sachin Tendulkar, by building a statue. The statue was crafted by Prasad Kamble and has been placed in the Wankhede Stadium.

 It was unveiled on 1st November and the inauguration ceremony was attended by the Indian legend himself. The statue was placed in between the Sachin Tendulkar Stand and Vijay Merchant Pavilion and depicted him hitting a lofted shot down the ground.

Tendulkar has played 664 International matches for India, scoring 34,357 runs in a span of 24 years. He is regarded as the greatest batter and player to ever grace the game, with even Don Bradman saying he was reminded of himself after watching Sachin bat. 

Sachin Tendulkar played his last international match in November 2013, in a Test match against West Indies. In April 2023, the MCA announced their plan of building a statue of Sachin and finally placed it in the Wankhede Stadium on 1st November, a day before India played Sri Lanka in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. 

Fans are confused, wonder if the statue is of Sachin Tendulkar or Steve Smith

The first time fans got to see a close up of the statue, many fans were caught off-guard. Although the statue was supposed to be of Sachin Tendulkar, it ended up looking like Steve Smith. The face of the statue had an uncanny resemblance of the Australian batter and not of the Indian legend.

Many fans genuinely thought it looked like Smith more than Sachin. Many joked, saying they accidentally built a statue of Smith but called it Sachin’s. Even the British eyewear company, Specsavers, said it was Steve Smith’s statue.
