Delhi Capitals became the first finalist of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) after the match against UP Warriorz on Tuesday (March 21) at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. All they had to do was chase down the target of 139 in 19.5 overs. However, it took them 17.5 overs to chase the target to win the match by five wickets.

Delhi captain and opener Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma were all guns blazing with their scintillating stand of 56 before Soppadhandi Yashasri dismissed the latter in the 4.5 over. Jemimah Rodrigues, the next batter, could manage just three runs when Shabnim Ismail trapped her for lbw.

Later, Marizanne Kapp and Alice Capsey steadied the ship with their slow knocks and subsequently drove the team past the target. Capsey scored 34 runs from 31 balls, including four boundaries and a maximum. Sophie Ecclestone was able to get rid of her in the 17th over but she had already done the job for the team. Ecclestone’s delivery made Capsey dance down the track but keeper Alyssa Healy was quick to dislodge the balls.

The later part of the job was completed by Kapp who remained unbeaten after her 34 runs from 31 balls (with four boundaries and a six). And as Delhi Capitals successfully chased away the target before 19.5 overs, they replaced Mumbai Indians to become the table topper and in the process directly qualified for the final, which is scheduled to take place on March 26.
