Australian paceman Mitchell Starc saw Sri Lankan opener Kusal Perera leaving the crease early before delivery of his ball during Sri Lanka’s innings on Monday (October 16) at the Ekana Sports City in Lucknow. On the fourth delivery, he paused during his delivery stride and gave a warning to Perera.

Even on the last ball of the third over, Starc stopped to attempt the run-out but Perera was well behind the crease. Ex-England skipper and commentator Nasser Hussain said on-air that the Aussie quick had told the umpire about Perera’s getting a head start before delivery of the ball.

After the first ball Starc had a little word with the umpire, Kusal Perera just leaving his crease…he was saying to Kusal Perera ‘don’t leave your crease’,” Hussain said on-air.

This was surprising, given that it came from Starc who once uttered, “I am not Deepti, but I won’t do it. That doesn’t mean you can leave early” while giving a warning to English skipper Jos Buttler who was leaving the crease prematurely during a T20I match last year. The incident happened after the huge uproar over Indian women’s cricketer Deepti Sharma’s run-out of England’s Charlie Dean during an ODI match that year.

The Mankad dismissal is a controversial one. India’s former captain Vinoo Mankad first attempted the dismissal when he ran out Bill Brown of Australia at the non-striker’s end in a Test match.

Fans on social media are praising Mitchell Starc for giving the warning to the batter before attempting the Mankading. A section of the fans said the Aussie pacer should have run out Kusal Perera without giving the warning.
