It’s tough to write off Australia in the ODI World Cup. The five-time champions, after a series of average performances, hammered the Netherlands by a massive 309 runs while defending 400 runs on Wednesday (October 25) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

With two centuries and two half-centuries from Aussie batters, their scoreboard read 399/8 in 50 overs. The two centurions were David Warner and Glenn Maxwell.

While Warner blasted his second ton (104 off 93) of this World Cup, it was Maxwell whose carnage knew no bounds, for he smacked the fastest century in the history of the ODI World Cup and the fastest ODI ton as an Aussie batter, off just 40 balls. During his whirlwind knock of 106 runs off 44 balls, he hit nine boundaries and eight sixes and batted at a monstrous strike rate of 240.91.

Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne contributed with their half-centuries. While Smith scored 71 off 68 balls, Labuschagne made 62 runs from 47 balls.Aussie spinner Adam Zampa was the wreaker in chief behind the Dutchmen’s misery. In just three overs, he sent four batters to packing for just eight runs. Mitchell Marsh scalped two wickets, while Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins bagged one wicket each. From the Netherlands’ side, Vikramjit Singh scored the highest runs (25 off 25). The Dutchmen got bundled out for a paltry 90 runs in 21 overs.

Netizens praise Australia for their thumping win over the Netherlands

Netizens wanted to see this side of the Aussies in the World Cup, even against an associate nation like the Netherlands. They are saying one shouldn’t write off Australia in the quadrennial tournament, for they are the five-time champions. However, some fans also criticized the Aussies for producing such a performance only against the Netherlands. They want them to unleash their beast mode against stronger teams as well.
