Though Shikhar Dhawan will not be a part of the 2023 ODI World Cup, his recent social media post has left fans emotional. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the 15-member squad for the upcoming World Cup and Dhawan could not find a place it in.
The rise of openers like Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan has made it difficult for a veteran opener like Dhawan to cement his spot in the squad again. Gill has been enjoying a brilliant form this year, though in recent months, it did slump a bit. Nevertheless, with a double century and multiple excellent knocks, it’s difficult to imagine an Indian team minus Gill.
Dhawan has also acknowledged the same in the past that a team selection is based on the form of the players. After the release of the squad by the BCCI, the “selfless” Dhawan congratulated the squad and expressed his hope that the team would win the ODI World Cup.
“Congratulations to my fellow team mates & friends chosen to represent India in the WC 2023 tournament! With the prayers and support of 1.5 billion people, you carry our hopes and dreams. May you bring the cup back home and make us proud! Go all out, Team India!” Dhawan wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Shikhar Dhawan last played an ODI match against Bangladesh in December 2022, his last international match so far. In 167 ODI matches, the 37-year-old scored 6793 runs at an average of 44.11. He has 17 centuries and 39 half-centuries to his name in this format. In the other two formats, Dhawan scored 2315 Test runs from 34 matches, while in 68 T20Is, he scored 1759 runs.
Besides India cricket, he a regular face in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He captains the Punjab Kings and in 2023, he scored 373 runs in 11 matches. Overall, he has collected 6617 runs from 217 IPL matches.
