Former India pacer Irfan Pathan‘s tweet after Chennai Super Kings‘s (CSK) win over Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) did not go down well with the fans. Due to heavy rain, the IPL final, which was originally slated to take place on Sunday (May 28), was played the next day. GT batted smoothly after they were asked to bat first, putting on 214/4 in 20 overs. But after their innings, the match was halted for a long time due to rain.

But thankfully, the match resumed and CSK got a 171-run target as per the DLS method and the second innings was reduced to 15 overs. CSK, with small contributions from a few batters, chased down the target and became champions for the fifth time.

Irfan Pathan however, thinks rain made it easier for the five-time champions since they did not face the league’s top three bowlers, Rashid Khan, Mohammed Shami, and Mohit Sharma. But this remark from Pathan drew mixed reactions from the fans.

“In a rain curtailed shortened final Yesterday CSK started batting with Shami. Rasid and Mohit losing one over each from their regular quota of 4 overs. That means league’s top 3 wicket takers were deprived of 18 balls and no wickets. That’s certainly played as an advantage to CSK,” wrote Pathan.

Scoring 171 in 15 overs against the best bowling line up is not easy. 9 out of 10 time bowling team will win but it was that one time yesterday and final pressure was also there. Csk have played many finals and their management know how to release pressure of final.

In the curtailed shortened final, of Shami/Rashid & Mohit – 3 overs of 54b they bowled CSK scored 109 runs. So if they had bowled csk would have scored 145 runs leaving only 71 to score of remaining 8.

That means if we had a full game, we could have ended the game in 19 overs…

After the conclusion of the cash-rich league, Irfan Pathan picked his best-playing XI of the tournament. He made Faf du Plessis the team’s captain and Heinrich Klaasen the wicketkeeper.
