Will Gujarat Titans (GT) defend their Indian Premier League (IPL) crown this season? It will be seen as the season progresses further. But right now, they have become the first team to qualify for the playoffs, for the second consecutive time.

The Hardik Pandya-led side defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to advance to the next stage. SRH failed to chase down a 189-run total, losing the match by 34 runs on Monday (May 15) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Gujarat’s Shubman Gill was the reason behind the win, for he slammed his maiden IPL ton, scoring 103 runs from 58 balls. His innings, plus Sai Sudharsan’s 36-ball 47 helped the side post 188/9 in their 20 overs.

Later, SRH’s Heinrich Klaasen slammed 64 runs from 44 balls but it wasn’t enough for the Orange Army to pull off this match. Apart from Klaasen, Bhuvneshwar Kumar contributed 27 runs from 26 balls. From GT bowlers, Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma rocked, for they bagged four wickets each and destroyed SRH’s batting line-up. If it wasn’t for Klaasen, SRH wouldn’t have even touched the 100-run mark. At one point, SRH were at 59/7, and Klassen’s half-century took the team to 154/9 in their 20 overs.
