According to India great Virat Kohli, former Australia skipper Steve Smith is the best batter of this generation. Both players are currently playing in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at The Oval in London.
Judging the present situation of the one-off Test, it looks like either Australia will win the match or India can draw it. The Aussies have full control of the momentum as they have put on 469 in the first innings. The reason behind this total is Steve Smith and Travis Head‘s who put Australia in the driver’s seat as both of them scored their respective centuries. Smith smashed his 31st Test century, scoring 121 runs with 19 fours.
Hailing Smith for his consistency and adaptability, Kohli called him the best Test batsman of this generation. “According to me, Steve Smith is the best Test player of this generation. He has displayed that, his adaptability is absolutely brilliant. You take any cricketer of this generation,” Kohli told Star Sports ahead of the ongoing WTC Final.
“Everybody knows his record, in 85-90 Tests, he has an average of 60 which is quite unbelievable. The consistency and impact with which he scores runs, I haven’t seen any Test player doing that in the last 10 years. It is a credit to his skill and temperament,” the 34-year-old added.
Steve Smith broke these records after his century against India
After adding that 121 runs in his overall Test score, Steve Smith now has 8913 runs from 97 matches with 31 centuries and 37 fifties, at a 50-plus average. He also surpassed former opener Matthew Hayden to become the third Aussie batter with the most Test centuries. It was also his ninth century against India and equaled England’s Joe Root’s score for most centuries against India.
Talking about the WTC Final, India have scored 151/5 and are trailing by 318 runs (at the time of writing this article). Kohli could score a mere 14 runs from 31 balls before he was sent to packing by Cameron Green.
