The iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata is regarded as one of the best stadiums in India. It has been a ground where various important moments of Indian Cricket history in the 46 years of International matches played. It has a capacity of 68,000. It is also the oldest cricket stadium in India.
It has hosted 31 ODI matches, with the stadium being used in the 1987, 1996 and 2011 World Cup. Australia won the 1987 World Cup in Eden Gardens as well and the 1996 World Cup semi finals.
Sri Lanka completed one of the biggest upsets in 1996, when they beat India in the Semi-Final of the 1996 ODI World Cup. While chasing a score of 252, the Indian batting order collapsed thanks to brilliant bowling by the Sri Lankan side. This led to enraged fans starting a fire in the stands, which led to the match being abandoned and Sri Lanka winning by default.
Other iconic moments in the Eden Gardens include India’s test match triumph over Australia despite being asked to follow on in 2001, Carlos Braithwaite’s heroics to win West Indies the 2016 T20 World Cup and Rohit Sharma scoring the highest ODI innings of all time. It also hosted the first Day/Night test hosted in India.
