The iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the first match of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Jos Buttler-led England will lock horns with Kane Williamson‘s men on Thursday (October 5).
The Narendra Modi Stadium is the second-largest stadium in the world and the largest one in cricket. It has a seating capacity of 134,000.
Apart from the tournament opener and other matches, the final will also be held at the stadium. The most hyped match, India versus Pakistan, will take place there on October 14.
The stadium staged host to the first ODI in 1984 against Australia. The last ODI played here was in February 2011 between India and West Indies.

The stadium, formerly known as Sardar Patel Stadium also hosted matches of the ODI World Cups in 1987, 1996, and 2011 when India co-hosted the tournament along with its neighbour countries. This year, the stadium will host five matches of the ODI World Cup which also includes the first and final ones.

South Africa, in 2010, posted the highest total at the stadium in ODIs when they locked horns with India. They scored 365/2 runs. On the other hand, Zimbabwe scored the lowest total (85 all out) when they faced West Indies in 2006.
Ex-India skipper Sourav Ganguly (144 off 152) top scored here back in 2000 against Zimbabwe, while West Indies’ Chris Gayle amassed the most runs (316). Ex-Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson has the best bowling figures (4/19) while Kapil Dev picked up the most wickets (10).
The pitch used to be bowler-friendly but in recent times, batters started getting more assistance from it. It has hosted 26 ODI matches and the average first innings total is 242. The team batting first has won 14 matches while the the batting in second innings won matches 12 times.
