Just minutes after came Suresh Raina‘s announcement of retirement. While many thought that it was impromptu decision by them, this wasn’t the case because Raina revealed that both had planned for retirement on 15th August.
“We had already made up our minds to retire on Saturday (August 15). Dhoni’s jersey number is 7 and mine is 3 – put it together and it makes 73. And on August 15, India completed 73 years of independence, so there couldn’t have been a better day,” Raina told Dainik Jagran.
Dhoni is active in the Indian Premier League while playing for the Chennai Super Kings and captaining the Yellow Army. He is India’s most successful captain as he led the Men in Blue in three ICC titles- ICC T20 World Cup in 2007, ICC ODI World Cup in 2011, and ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.
He made his debut against Bangadesh in 2004 and amassed 10,773 ODI runs in 350 games.
