After the 2023 ODI World Cup, the Pakistan Cricket Board underwent a rebuilding period. The coaches were fired, a new chairman was appointed, the Pakistan captain was replaced but now his replacement has been replaced.
It first began when Babar Azam stepped down from his role as captain in all formats after the 2023 ODI World Cup. He was replaced by Shaheen Afridi in white-ball and Shan Masood in Tests. Ever since his resignation, Pakistan have played only one Test series and one T20I series, which was captained by Shaheen Afridi.
The reports of Azam being reappointed came out a few days after the end of the 2024 Pakistan Super League finals, but it has now been confirmed by the PCB that he will be replacing Afridi. Afridi held the role for a total of 137 days and captained Pakistan for only 5 matches.
Fans mock PCB as they reappoint Babar Azam back as captain
Many fans mocked Pakistan Cricket Board for reappointing Babar Azam as their new captain. They called it a clown show for getting Azam back as their captain, just four months after he left the post.
Check out their reactions:
Babar Azam has captained Pakistan in 43 ODIs, winning 26 of them. He also led in 71 T20Is, winning 42 matches. Shaheen Afridi meanwhile had captained in one series, losing 4-1 to New Zealand.
Azam’s first series since his reappointment will be against New Zealand, who will tour them for a five-match T20I series. Pakistan will then tour Ireland for three T20Is and England for four T20Is. These 12 matches will be the matches Pakistan will play before the start of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Their opponents in the group stages are India, Ireland, Canada and USA.
